Types of Dental Crowns Offered at our Manhattan Practice
There are a number of types of dental crowns offered by Dr. Beshar at his Manhattan dentistry practice. If a patient needs to protect a front tooth, he or she may be more likely to select a crown type that most closely matches the surrounding teeth but these crowns are slightly less durable. When a crown is needed for molar or back tooth that doesn’t show, a more resilient metal crown may be the best choice. Stainless Steel Crowns
Dr. Beshar may fit a patient with a temporary stainless steel crown to protect a patient’s tooth or a filling as that patient waits for his or her permanent crown to be fabricated at our premier dental laboratory. Stainless steel crowns are also often used for children when they suffer damage to a primary tooth because they only require one visit to our office in Manhattan. Another reason stainless steel crowns are a good choice for children is that they are the most cost-effective way to protect a damaged primary tooth that will eventually be lost to make room for a permanent tooth.
Many of our Manhattan-area patients opt for metal crowns because they require Dr. Beshar to remove less tooth structure than other types of dental crowns. Metal crowns are also the most durable type of crown, and they cause the least wear to opposing teeth. While many patients are bothered by the metallic color of these crowns, they are a great option when out-of-sight molars need to be protected.
Unlike metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can be crafted to match the color of adjacent teeth though in some cases a dark line may be visible at the gum line as the metal underlying the porcelain shows through. While this type of crown is a good option for both front and back teeth that need to be protected, they are more prone to cause wear to opposing teeth than other crown options and they also have the potential to chip or crack.
Resin crowns are the most cost-effective type of crowns offered at Dr. Beshar’s Manhattan office and they can be crafted to match the appearance of surrounding teeth. When compared to other dental crown options, resin crowns are more likely to wear down over time and are also more prone to fractures.
Ceramic or Porcelain Crowns
When a front tooth needs to be protected, all-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns can be custom-crafted to provide the closest possible match to surrounding teeth. Though ceramic and porcelain crowns are often the most aesthetic option for our Manhattan patients, they are not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and can cause a bit more wear to opposing teeth.
